Australia's Tony McNamara Scores Major US Screenwriting Award For 'The Great'

Another big achievement for 'The Great'!

Australia's Tony McNamara has won a Writers Guild Of America Award. 

McNamara has been awarded the Episodic Comedy award for his show The Great, beating Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, Dead To Me, Ted Lasso, Grace & Frankie and High Maintenance for the award.

The Great was also nominated for Comedy Series and New Series categories at the award.

The show, which aired last year and is now heading into its second season, is based on Russia's longest-running woman leader Catherine The Great and stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. 

The ten-episode miniseries is based on McNamara's Catherine The Great play which premiered at Sydney Theatre Company in 2008 and has previously been nominated for Golden Globe and Emmy Awards

Born in Kilmore, Victoria, McNamara has gone on to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Favourite, as well as creating local drama Doctor Doctor and writing for shows like The Secret Life Of Us, Love My Way, Tangle, Puberty Blues and more. 

McNamara's next project, Cruella starring Emma Stone, is scheduled for release later this year.
