Iconic comedy rockers Tenacious D are returning to Australia this July, bringing their lauded Spicy Meatball Tour down under. The duo – actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass – last toured in Australia in May 2013.
The band behind Tribute, “the best song in the world”, begin their tour on Sunday, 14 July, at Sydney’s ICC Theatre before heading to the Newcastle Entertainment Centre (Tuesday, 16 July), Brisbane Entertainment Centre (Thursday, 18 July), Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena (Saturday, 20 July), and the Adelaide Entertainment Centre (Monday, 22 July) before heading to New Zealand.
The New Zealand dates are Wednesday, 24 July, at Wellington’s TSB Arena, followed by Auckland’s Spark Arena on Friday, 26 July.
Fans who are especially keen can buy tickets now, as the Frontier Touring pre-sale has already begun. General sale tickets will be available via the Frontier Touring website from noon on Friday, 9 February. Use the password “SPICY” until allocation is exhausted or before it ends in 48 hours.
Today’s tour announcement arrives just a few days after Frontier Touring hinted at a 2024 Tenacious D Australian tour. The tour promoters teased a tour announcement featuring an animated meatball bounding toward a man wearing a hat. The caption, “The greatest and best band in the world...” references the band’s beloved 2006 single Tribute.

In a 2013 recap of the band’s Sydney Opera House performance, The Music’s Matt MacMaster wrote, “Kyle Gass is a really talented musician, and it's fun seeing such a huge disconnect between the dude himself and the incredible metal chops he boasts. He looks like he should be running a semi-successful used car dealership, not shredding his fingers on explosive blues riffs.
“Vocalist Jack Black performed as expected, and his wild micro-bursts of energy and erratic dancing are still as hilarious as it is hypnotic. The quality of his voice is never in doubt, and neither is his songwriting ability.”
Last year, Tenacious D premiered a pair of new songs at Shaky Knees Festival in the US: Video Games and The Spicy Meatball Song. From May through to October 2023, Tenacious D played in venues across the US on the Spicy Meatball Tour.
The music video for Video Games paid tribute to beloved video games for Millennials and Gen Z, including Red Dead Redemption 2, Super Mario Bros, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Fallout 4, to name a few. In June 2023, they honoured Chris Isaak with their take on Wicked Game. Check that out below.
