The hard-partying Deryck Whibley has officially reached his limit
Pop punk's not dead, but it came a little too close to being that way for Deryck Whibley's comfort recently following a harrowing stay in hospital as a result of hitting the bottle a little (well, a lot) too hard.
In a statement on his official website this morning, the Sum 41 frontman explained that he has been in hospital for the past month, incapacitated by illness in the weeks leading up to that stay.
“The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I've been doing over the years,” he says in the post. “It finally caught up to me.”
Detailing when things took a turn for the worse, Whibley recounts how, on an ordinary evening at home, he had poured himself a drink when he suddenly felt off before collapsing and being rushed to the hospital, where he was then sedated for the next week.

“I had no idea where I was … I was so freaked out,” he writes in the statement.
“My liver and kidneys collapsed on me. Needless to say, it scared me straight. I finally realized I can't drink anymore. If I have one drink, the docs say I will die.”
He concludes the statement by saying that the experience taught him the value of drinking responsibly, albeit too late, and that now that he is clean and sober, he has his “passion and inspiration” back for writing music.
So… good? We think? The not-drinking thing definitely is, at any rate.
