Spiegeltent Looking For New Home Amid Arts Centre Losses

Iconic Melbourne venue victim of $1 million loss

The original Melbourne Spiegeltent is looking for a new home after becoming a victim of the financial crisis at the Arts Centre Melbourne.

For the last two years the tent has appeared on the Arts Centre's forecourt, but will not be returning in 2014 as the venue scrambles to cut costs. According to the ABC, redundancies were made across all departments earlier this week after the Centre posted a $1 million loss in past financial year.

Today the Spiegeltent's owner David Bates had not responded to theMusic.com.au's request for comment on the iconic venue's future in time for deadline today.

Meetings with staff are believed to be taking place this week to detail the redundancies and the Arts Centre's functions moving forward.

A former staff member of the Centre told the ABC. “There is zero money for programming. There is no cultural or artistic imperative because the focus is entirely on trying to make a profit.”

The major deficit is likely to affect many of the organisations who utilise the Centre's venues, including Hamer Hall, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Playhouse, Fairfax Studio and the State Theatre.
