'Is That Genuine?' Sydney Singer Responds To Coaches After 'The Voice' Elimination

8 July 2020 | 9:06 am | Staff Writer

"Do I actually have what it takes to be a musician?”

Sydney singer Soma Sutton asked some blunt questions to the judges on The Voice last night after being eliminated in the Playoffs round.

Sutton - who featured on fellow Sydney artist Talia Leah's track, I Still Love, released through Melbourne-based label Best & Fairest last year - was not chosen to progress following her performance of Brandy & Monica's '90s hit, The Boy Is Mine.

Coach Guy Sebastian said he had "unlocked something" that Sutton needed to work on which resulted in a frank response from The Voice contestant.

“OK, well, the thing about that is that I didn’t really want to come on the show in the first place,” Sutton said.

“I was convinced to come here, to be here, to stand here and do this in front of you. And, like, it is disheartening.

“Your advice that you guys all give, it’s like, is that genuine? I would just like to know, you know, what you really think. Like, do I actually have what it takes to be a musician?”

She continued, “I think the disheartening thing about it is that you don’t have enough time to get to know me.

"You don’t know why I am in my shell.”

Sebastian said Sutton has "something very special" while coach Boy George added, "We can't make you into what you're going to become... but you definitely have something very unique about you".

Meanwhile also on Tuesday night's episode, Sebastian's brother Chris Sebastian advanced to the next round following his performance of Bruno Mars' 24k Magic.

Other notable local acts who advanced this week include in Timothy James Bowen, Matt Gresham and the pairing of Matt Evans and Janie Gordon as Goldi.

The Voice continues on the Nine network this Sunday from 7pm.
