"It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni."
At last, a biopic film about one of hip-hop's most beloved figures, Snoop Dogg, is in the works.
As Deadline reported, the movie is in partnership with Snoop's newly formed Death Row Pictures and Universal Pictures. The biopic will be the first film from Death Row Pictures and feature music from Snoop Dogg's extensive catalogue. Menace II Society director, Allen Hughes, takes the reigns alongside Black Panther's Joe Robert Cole, penning the script. Snoop is co-producing with Hughes and Sara Ramaker.
"I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I'm trying to portray on screen and the memory I'm trying to leave behind," Snoop revealed in a statement. "It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni."
Hughes is no hip-hop newcomer: he worked on the critically acclaimed HBO series, The Defiant Ones, which followed the rise of Dr Dre and the producer and 2022 Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer Jimmy Iovine. Hughes is currently directing and executive directing Dear Mama, the first definitive and comprehensive documentary series on Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni Shakur, who was an activist. He has full access to the Shakur estate, including all of Tupac's music and poetry.
Speaking about Snoop, he shared, "Snoop Dogg is one of the most internationally beloved figures in hip-hop. There's just something about his energy that brings people of all walks of life together.
"Snoop Dogg, not just the artist, but the man and his brand, has transcended generations with his connection and appeal to audiences. His story is so authentic and utterly inspiring, and to have the opportunity to tell his story allows me to go back to the hood 30 years after Menace II Society, and say more now than I could then."

Snoop Dogg joins an esteemed list of hip-hop musicians with biopics. The N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton famously chronicled the lives of Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Eminem was the first-ever rapper to win an Oscar for the 8 Mile classic song, Lose Yourself.
We don't know if the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic will receive similar accolades, but we greatly look forward to watching his story unfold on screen.
