There is much that can be said about music’s transformative, transportational power, and the ability it has to move and affect you in unthought of ways. The chances are good, that most comments to that effect are said with bands like Naarm/Melbourne outfit Intermood.
Relative newcomers to the local music scene, Intermood’s recorded output is rather small thus far, with only the likes of 2023’s Winery Life being available until today.
However, the group have been a revelation on the live circuit already, turning heads with their commitment to bringing the ruckus thanks to their unique blend of instrumental psychedelic jazz and high energy neo-disco.
To listen to their music is one thing, but to experience it live is a transcendent experience that lacks any sort of comparison.
Now, they’re back with a new single, with the Hypnagogic arriving ahead of its official release on Friday, November 22nd.

At almost nine minutes in length, it’s a lofty undertaking, but one which is so accomplished and (in keeping with its title) hypnotic in its construction. Pairing the live dance music vibes of Mildlife and L’Éclair, and the laidback house rhythms of Todd Terje, it’s a blissed out groove which you have to experience at least once.
Ebbing and flowing with its hypnotic groove and fluttering flute, Hypnagogic moves towards that blissful euphoria with each and every second, allowing the raucous unity of the group to never once overwhelm, and allowing space to wash over the listener, giving them room to breathe as the track unfolds.
“Hypnagogic arrived to us unprecedentedly, during a deep cathartic jam,” explained Intermood’s Miles Murray. “It represents a groovy melancholy, of things that were, things that are, and things to come.
“In many ways, playing this song is a form of therapy for us, opening ourselves up to ideas of the past and future, whilst entering a warm, psychedelic dream state”.
While only their second song, there is plenty more to come from Intermood in the future. For those in Melbourne, you can catch both the new track (and a preview of what the future holds) at the band’s single launch show at The Curtin on Friday November 22nd. Supported by Robbie Belchamber and Musclyboy, tickets are on sale now.
Already they’ve found themselves invited to perform at the 2024 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and were recently announced as the recipients of the 2024 Strawberry Fields Live Music Act Competition. Needless to say, Intermood is a band you need to experience sooner rather than later.
