The Superjesus frontwoman Sarah McLeod has followed up last week's comments describing the A Day On The Green touring event as a "sausage fest", explaining that she had no intent of turning the dropping of her band and fellow femme-fronted rockers The Baby Animals from the line-up into an issue about sexism.
"Hey guys just to clarify, cause the media have jumped all over this, I wasn't insinuating that The Superjesus ... and BA's were booted off A Day On The Green because the promoter was sexist, I was just informing everyone what was left on the bill so you can make up your own minds depending on your personal music taste," she wrote.
"It was a coincidence that the only two bands with women in them got shafted and yes we are still bummed and yes it's still a sausage fest ... that is all!"
The clarification should come as a degree of vindication for organisers; at the time of the original comments, festival promoter Michael Newton had defended the decision to drop the bands — which arose in a perfect storm of events that saw Billy Idol's planned Australian tour become something of a surrogate for the planned A Day On The Green shows featuring Cheap Trick, The Angels and Choirboys — saying he "did not even think about it being a gender issue", and that the thought had "never even entered [his] head".
"We thought this was the best result for everyone, rather than just cancelling the tour," Newton told theMusic.com.au last week. "This was the best result. I thought up until now we'd really done the right thing by everyone, given the circumstances."
