"I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to commemorate it’s release than with this rare and beautiful phenomenon that visually symbolises so much of what the album explores.”

Eight Australian Pink Floyd fans can have the experience of a lifetime on Thursday, 20 April, courtesy of the band’s long-time Creative Consultant and Hipgnosis co-founder, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon, the band offers a spellbinding opportunity to experience the album during a total solar eclipse at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Marine Park (Nyinggulu) in Exmouth - the site is the best land-based place on Earth to experience the 2023 total solar eclipse.
The band is gifting eight Aussie competition winners the exclusive opportunity to visit a spectacular scenic location within the region to hear The Dark Side Of The Moon in full – with Roger Waters's iconic closing lines “But the sun is eclipsed by the moon…” from the album’s soaring final song Eclipse timed to align with the moment of total eclipse.
To enter the competition, all you have to do is submit a video (30 seconds or less) explaining why you should be present at the listening experience of a lifetime. You can enter here.
The eight competition winners will be called the Astronomy Domine 8 – a nod to the band’s classic song of the same name.
Even if you’re unsuccessful in winning the competition, you can still experience a Dark Side listening party, with the solar eclipse partially viewable across the country (with varying degrees of magnitude).
Here are the times to start playing the album to approximately align Roger Waters's final line of Eclipse with the partial eclipse*:
WESTERN AUSTRALIA – approx. 10:30 am local time; 0.766 Magnitude (for Perth – the eclipse will be greater magnitude further north)
SOUTH AUSTRALIA – approx. 12:48 pm local time; 0.192 Magnitude
NORTHERN TERRITORY – approx. 1:10 pm local time; 0.845 Magnitude
TASMANIA – approx. 1:24 pm local time; 0.125 Magnitude
VICTORIA – approx. 1:27 pm local time; 0.205 Magnitude
ACT – approx. 1:40 pm local time; 0.192 Magnitude
NSW – approx. 1:46 pm local time; 0.191 Magnitude
QUEENSLAND – approx. 2:02 pm local time; 0.270 Magnitude
*You should never attempt to observe a total, partial or annular eclipse with the naked eye. There are several ways to watch an eclipse - for more information, visit the ARPANSA website.
Powell said about the competition, “Since its release 50 years ago, The Dark Side Of The Moon has been embraced by multiple generations across the world because it examines universal themes of greed, mortality, the dark and light sides of the human psyche and, of course, our place in the cosmos – I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to commemorate it’s release than with this rare and beautiful phenomenon that visually symbolises so much of what the album explores.”
