Their music might typically be seen as being from opposite sides of the genre spectrum, but a new collaboration has seen Culture Club’s Boy George team up with Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy.

The new track, titled Let The Flowers Grow, is released today and arrives as a dark piece of atmospheric rock that sees the two ‘80s icons combining their powerful voices in equal measure to craft something moody and immersive.

“I first met Boy George when he asked to be allowed backstage to meet Howard Devoto when Bauhaus were supporting Magazine,” Murphy said to Rolling Stone of how their collaboration came about. “He struck me as a super-original, self-styled 17th century fop.

“The second time I met him was when we walked into the BBC to do Ziggy Stardust on Top Of The Pops where Culture Club were also making their debut on the show. George greeted me very warmly and I discovered he was a Bauhaus fan.”

The pair reportedly met numerous times over the years, before producer Youth (aka Martin Glover of Killing Joke) played a snippet of a Boy George demo while Murphy was in Spain. Urging Youth to prepare the song, Murphy added his own vocals before sharing it with Boy George who reacted positively.

“When I heard the mix I was satiated in every way. I have always loved Pete’s voice and his writing on this adds a beautiful darkness,” Boy George told Rolling Stone. “With everything going on in the world about identity it feels very powerful. The production feels very epic like Scott Walker. It makes me dizzy and proud.”

The track is reportedly a one-off single from the pair, so fans shouldn’t be expecting a full-length album to materialise at any point.

Currently, it's been three years since Boy George last released a new record, though he issued Electric Energy earlier this year, with the Ariana DeBose and Nile Rodgers-featuring track arriving as part of the Argylle soundtrack.

Murphy, however, hasn’t released new music since his 2014 album, Lion. In 2022 however, a reformed Bauhaus released Drink The New Wine. Their first new piece of music since 2008’s Go Away White album, it too was a standalone track, with members recording remotely during COVID.
