Olivia Rodrigo ProfileOlivia Rodrigo quickly shut down rumours that she used AI in the music video for her latest single, a remix of her track expectations featuring Chappell Roan.
Last week, Rodrigo announced that she’d remixed the track and would release the music video, starring Chappell Roan.
The pair are close friends, and the latter recently discussed the former’s influence on her music in an interview with triple j. Plus, they both performed at Olivia Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields Festival, which featured women and gender-diverse artists.
After the music video premiered last week, some viewers quickly accused Rodrigo and her team of using AI in the animated segments, as the character, which looked like Roan, seemingly had missing limbs and the video’s colour would change.
Beyond the animated segments, the music video featured a reality television-style game hosted by Talking Heads’ David Byrne and starring Rodrigo and Roan.
To shut down the AI rumours before they could take over online, Olivia Rodrigo's official fan channel, Livies HQ, took to Instagram to show the hand-drawn characters and animation in the video.
The caption for the reel reads: “bts of the hand-drawn characters, 2D & 3D animation, and analog TV screens used to create the retro graphics of the expectations music video.”
Check out the expectations music video and the behind-the-scenes clip below.
Expectations was originally the penultimate track on Rodrigo’s third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Released in June of this year, the album debuted at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
With the remix of the fan-favourite track, expectations could become her latest hit. Expectations is a new-wave-inspired track, which is fitting as The Cure’s Robert Smith features on the album track what’s wrong with me.
Olivia Rodrigo brought her sold-out GUTS World Tour to Australia in October 2024. Reviewing her show at Rod Laver Arena, The Music’s Christopher Lewis declared that Rodrigo was the “complete package” and praised her confidence and “masterful” performance abilities.
Earlier this year, she announced her Unraveled Tour in support of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, but hasn’t yet revealed tour dates in Australia, New Zealand or Asia.
