Australia's Niterunner is making dreamy, retro pop music the right way.
Niterunner, a relatively new soulful and electric pop duo from Byron Bay and Brisbane respectively, are producing the right kind of contemporary-meets-80's pop music with their latest song, 'Out Of Your Hands'.
Now look, I am an absolute sucker for these kinds of songs, songs that would act as the soundtracks to movies like Drive, The Neon Demon and video games like Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Or just the entirety of The Black Queen's debut album, 'Fever Daydream', one of my favourite records of last year. So, me listening to a song like this is like a chocolate lover being slowly lowered into a vat of warm, glistening fudge - a fucking good time!
In all seriousness, ‘Out Of Your Hands’ is an upbeat summer anthem that draws upon its nostalgic dreamy soundscapes made up of washes of synths, melodic guitar riffs, tight pop-production and ethereal, soulful vocals. The group take some notable influences from the likes of Kavinsky (fuck yeah), Vallis Alps, Electric Youth, Yuma X, and Lastlings, so if you're a fan of any of those artists, you'll feel very at home here.

Now, this duo is actually a brother-sister combo of Daniel & Andrea Suesskow, and they've both turned to this creative outlets to help escape their normal daily lives of being a chef and veterinarian respectively. The music they create contains a very laid atmosphere and timbre, one that is in keeping with the tone of Australian locations like Brisbane and Byron Bay. Who says that we aren't products of our environments? No one, that's who!
'Funnily enough, 'Out Of Your Hands’ is actually a reworking of one of their earlier tracks. It was one of the first songs that the duo ever released, which quickly gained some decent momentum online, reaching 16,000+ views very quickly. (Because it's a solid tune.) In fact, their actual first release, ‘Toska’, was even featured on the Contiki Road Trip Asia Series 2015, and that is how you know that you've made it in the industry; by appearing in a Contiki ad.
Anyway, check out Niterunner's new song below (and their other singles here). I can tell that this one will be on high rotation with me for a long while in 2017.
