Always the bridesmaids, never the brides in the UK charts; could it finally be time for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis?

It could be a big week for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis with the pair in the running for their first-ever UK #1 album according to mid-week chart figures.

Off the back of a connected trilogy of Bad Seeds releases, Cave's early 2021 collaboration album Carnage with fellow bandmate Ellis offered a resounding testimony to the ongoing dexterity and astonishing might of these two enduring artists.

And while Carnage may have already unveiled digitally back in February, the physical product rollout - including CD and vinyl - of the new album finally came to fruition late last week following COVID-related delays, and it's now looking likely the pair are staring down their first ever UK #1 - but there's some pretty stiff competition lying in wait.

For both Cave and Ellis, if this direct team up can beat out the heavy favourite Olivia Rodrigo's SOUR to the #1 UK album spot this week, it will mark their highest individual and collaborative charting yet, with a string of UK Top 10 albums already under their belts via an array of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds releases.

Previous UK Top 10 albums for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds includes:

  • 1996's Murder Ballads at #8
  • 2008's Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! at #4
  • 2013's Push the Sky Away at #3
  • 2016's Skeleton Tree at #2
  • 2019's Ghosteen at #4

Previously, Cave's highest UK charting collaboration came in the form of the 1995 single Where The Wild Roses Grow, with the heavily popular murder ballad featuring Kylie Minogue hitting #11 on the UK singles charts.

Also in the running to clock in at #1 in the UK is BRITs Rising Star winner Griff, boasting the most downloaded album of the week so far via her mixtape One Foot In Front Of The Other; but will it all be enough to stop Rodrigo from returning to the #1 pedestal since SOUR debuted at the top back in May? Time will certainly tell.

The Australian mid-week charts are expected to land tomorrow to shed some light as to where we're likely to see Griff, Rodrigo and our local legends Cave and Ellis will land on the Aussie charts this week.
