The new live music and entertainment venue Foundry Theatre is coming to Sydney’s CBD early next year, opening its doors with an exciting program of live music, comedy, musical theatre and cabaret set for the first half of 2025.
Founded by singer-songwriter, actor, writer and comedian Tim Minchin, Foundry Theatre will be nestled within the famous Sydney Lyric at The Star. It’s a multi-purpose, flexible performance space used to host up to 360 seated or 630 standing guests. With minimalist-style interior design and dynamic lighting, the theatre aims to immerse patrons and performers into an unforgettable live theatre space where “no two visits will be the same”.
Minchin will be the first to grace the venue’s stage with his Tim Minchin – First at the Foundry show from February 11th. For five shows only, the experience is an opportunity for keen patrons to see the artistry of Tim and his band, as they muse an eclectic selection of music from Minchin’s wide-ranging repertoire.
“The opening of a new theatre is a rare and wonderful thing,” Minchin said.
“And I was stoked that the legendary Theatre-builder Stephen Found asked me to be the canary in the coalmine. Or the champagne bottle shattering on the hull. Or the mohel removing the foreskin of the... anyway, you get my drift. Stoked.”
Following Minchin’s artistic blessing of the Foundry, the venue will hold the Australian premiere of the international musical No Love Songs in March, and in early April, an exclusive run of the musicals Kiss Me Kate, Brush Up Your Shakespeare, Too Darn Hot, Always True To You (In my Fashion), Tom, Dick or Harry, and So In Love, presented by Neglected Musicals. Later in the month, award-winning musical comedian Gillian Cosgriff will bring her new show Fresh New Worries to Foundry, with radio DJ, talk show host and comedian Akmal taking over in May. The Umbilical Brothers will bring their unique mesh of live performance and cinema to the stage and Lawrence Mooney’s hour-long stand-up comedy show Dead Set Country will also take place during May. Entering into June, guests will check into L’Hôtel, an immersive theatrical world of French interests brought to you by director Craig Ilott and co-creator Stuart Couzens.
