Lizzo has made her feelings towards algorithms on social media known, alleging that they’re “racist and fat-phobic.” She also claimed that the state of said algorithms is “destroying” the rollout of her forthcoming album.

The About Damn Time hitmaker made her statements as she prepares to release her third album, Bitch, on Friday, 5 June. With just a few weeks to go until Lizzo drops her new record, she took to TikTok on Tuesday (12 May) to air her grievances with social media algorithms.

She captioned the post, “Don’t get me started on how the algorithm is racist & fat phobic.”

“The algorithm-based way that social media functions now is destroying the music industry,” she said. “If your algorithm is super serving you things out of order of when they’re happening, then the general public has no idea when music is actually coming out.”

She continued, “Back in the day, which was maybe even just five years ago, we used to get things chronologically. Music marketing relies heavily on social media, but now, ever since the algorithm has been showing us things out of order, there’s actually no way to successfully promote an album where everyone knows your album is coming.”

Lizzo added that despite having a career in music herself, she doesn’t see posts about new releases from fellow artists on her social media accounts.

“Where it bites me in the ass is I have a private page with over 280,000 people who follow me because they support me, because they love me,” she shared. “But even when I post on that page, I’m not hitting their algorithm.”

Lizzo announced that Bitch would be the title of her upcoming album earlier this month. It’s the follow-up to her 2022 album, Special, and features the singles Don’t Make Me Love U and the title track, which samples Meredith Brooks’s song of the same name. You can pre-order/pre-save the album here.

She’s also been busy outside of music. Her debut children’s book, Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’, drops on 8 September. Lizzo will also star as rock and roll pioneer, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios film, Rosetta.
