The BET Awards announced its nominations yesterday morning, with one of the most commercially successful rappers of the last two years Lil Nas X receiving zero nods.

The rapper, who is set to headline this year's Falls Festival, took to Twitter to vent his frustration over two years of snubs from the awards show.

He said in now-deleted Tweets, “Thank you BET awards. an outstanding zero nominations again."

Critics in his reply said maybe they just didn't like his music, which he responded to by saying, “idk maybe 3 of the biggest songs of last year & a critically acclaimed album. I feel like that should’ve helped me a bit.

“I just feel like Black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible."

He continued to say, "this not over no bet award this is about the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community, y’all can sit and pretend all u want but imma risk it all for us."

Many fans noted that he had been nominated for and won a prestigious Grammy Award and that he should not care about the BET Awards. He went on to respond stating, "this is my point exactly how can i get acknowledged by the most acclaimed award show in the world and then not even just 1 nomination from my own people? is that not crazy? am i really tripping."

After the Tweet tirade, Lil Nas X posted a snippet of a diss track to the BET Awards, titled Late To The Party, which features repetitive hook "Fuck BET/Fuck BET" and an NBA Youngboy feature.

Rapper and icon Queen Latifah publicly supported Nas' sentiment, stating, "He should’ve been nominated. I don’t know if that’s the case. I don’t know what’s behind all that, but inclusion is always the key. That’s what we should be striving for. There’s enough room in this world for everybody,” in an interview with TMZ.

The BET Awards has responded to the rapper's claims, defending its inclusive values as an organisation.

“We love Lil Nas X, he was nominated for a Best New Artist BET Award in 2020, and we proudly showcased his extraordinary talent and creativity on the show twice: He performed ‘Old Town Road’ with Billy Ray Cyrus at ‘BET Awards’ 2019 and his ‘BET Awards’ 2021 performance was a highlight of our show. No one cheered louder that night than BET.

“No one from BET serves as a member of the Voting Academy. At BET, we are passionate advocates for the wonderful diversity that exists within our community,” the statement continues. “We are committed to using all of our platforms to provide visibility and inclusion for all of the many intersections of the Black community.”

This year's BET Awards top nominations include Doja Cat, Drake, Silk Sonic, Kendrick Lamar and Ari Lennox
