A new single, a new sound, and new inspiration for WA band King Blue.
King Blue (Éva Burkhardt)
Hold on tight spider-monkeys, King Blue have returned with Tunnel Vision, the second musical offering of the year from the Perth (Boorloo) based quintet.
Released today (13 September), the track is a mellow deviation from King Blue’s usual pop leanings. Lead vocalist Skye Sam says they wanted to “explore more versatility” and “accomplished this whilst keeping true to ourselves and our sound.”
Throughout the track's production, Sam and guitarist Trent Knight credit American singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine’s music as a huge inspiration.
“We had her songs playing in the car and in the studio and were just in awe of her writing and storytelling. We found the simplicity of some of her songs is what made them so impactful. After messing around with different approaches, we ended up opting for that simplistic approach we admired so much.”
While McAlpine influenced Tunnel Vision’s structure and mood, an iconic film series provided inspiration for the track’s lyrics.
“As embarrassing as it is to admit, lyrically, I was inspired after a weekend of binge-watching the entire Twilight Saga,” admits Sam. “What began as a playful, satirical experiment with lyrics evolved into what has now become one of our favourite tracks.
“After becoming so accustomed and comfortable with writing from my own experiences and emotions, it was honestly really fun drawing from someone else’s story for these lyrics. It’s an approach I’d definitely like to try and experiment more with for future songs!”
While perhaps indiscernible to those unfamiliar with the cultural phenomenon that is Twilight, if you know, you know. And for those in the know, don’t you think Tunnel Vision could slot right in on the 2008 film’s soundtrack? We think yes.
For fans who love this new sound from the group, there is more to come. Sam assures fans that their main goal is “simply to write more and more, trying out new things and experimenting with genre blending.”
Sam says the band is going to “lean into every member's unique taste in music” and see what they can create. Another new release is on the way very soon.
In the interim, they are taking the time to celebrate their new single with a launch party at the Indian Ocean Hotel next Friday 20 September. With a pile of incredible local acts set to play (Teenage Vertigo, Lazy Haze, Sunsick), Sam has no doubt “the whole venue is going to be buzzing with energy and excitement.”
