Jimmy Barnes is undoubtedly an Australian music legend, but his heroics go far beyond singing and screaming into a microphone.

This week, he showed his support for Foodbank NSW & ACT by volunteering for the organisation with his family. While Barnes was there, he was interviewed by 9 News and discussed why supporting Foodbank is important to him.

“The family and I spent today working alongside the incredible volunteers at Foodbank NSW & ACT,” Barnes wrote on social media.

He continued, “With the cost of everyday essentials putting so much pressure on households, more and more families are finding it hard to put food on the table. No one should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

“That’s why the work Foodbank does is so important. A huge thank you to the team and volunteers who put their hearts into helping people every day.

“If you’re in a position to lend a hand, please visit their website to find out how you can help.”

In the interview with 9 News, he explained that showing up for Foodbank comes from a pure place: “families are struggling.”

“Foodbank do great work,” he said. “Every day, it gets harder and harder for families, and there’s no sort of real demographic here. It’s not just working-class families; all families are struggling.

“Whether it’s interest rates going up, fuel going up, groceries going up, rents going up, people struggle. Sometimes, people need long-term help; some people need help day-to-day. Foodbank does an amazing job.”

Barnes also reflected on his childhood, which involved growing up in a family that was “quite poor” and “battled and struggled.” “I used to go to school without lunch or breakfast,” he explained, “and it was heartbreaking and humiliating, and there’s a lot of stigma attached to poverty.”

He added that we’re all in life together, and he’s happy to contribute and help others.

In January, Jimmy Barnes returns to the road when he headlines the Red Hot Summer Tour. This week, it was also announced that he leads the 2027 edition of the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash.

Speaking on his headlining performance, he said, “The Mundi Mundi Bash is one of the greatest festivals on the planet. For a start, you get to see some of the best artists Australia has produced, which is always great, and secondly, the location for this festival is like no other place in the world. It is absolutely breathtaking.

“Driving out to the site takes you through some of the most stunning scenery ever. I, for one, can’t wait to get out there and get my band rocking. See you all there.”
