If you want to be transported to a time before lockout laws took control of Sydney, look no further than South King Recreation Club (SKRC).
The King Street, Newtown venue - "inspired by memories of pre-lockout Sydney" - held a special launch event last night, and will now operate 5pm-late Monday to Friday and from midday on weekends.
Alongside good music and classic pub food, SKRC will also host "some of Newtown's most recognised music veterans to make guest DJ appearances", as promised by Entertainment Director Rick "Hollywood" Hunter when the venue was announced last month.
"South King Rec Club pays homage to a simpler time, when it was acceptable to ‘open the shoulders’ as they say, which is basically a sports analogy that means ‘let’s go out, have a good time and god knows where this night will end up!’” venue owner Reg Wilcox told The Music.
“As Sydney becomes more regulated and the cost of living continues to grow, I think we’re all feeling nostalgic for a time when it was okay to have a drink on a school night and accidentally get home an hour late.
“A time when it was cool to head to your local and have a cheap parmy on a Wednesday because you’d spent all of your money on the weekend and rent is now $900 a week. If you ask me, rose coloured glasses are great - give them a try sometime!"
