Ed Sheeran’s long-awaited Loop Tour of Australia and New Zealand begins in Auckland tonight, and ahead of his return to the stage, he’s asking fans for a little bit of help.

In an Instagram Story posted on Thursday (15 January), the Shape Of You hitmaker revealed that at his shows, there will be a screen with a phone number, where fans can text their setlist recommendations. And Sheeran wants to be surprised – he’ll practice and play any song you like. His tour starts at Auckland’s Go Media Stadium tonight.

“So tomorrow, if you are at the gig, there will be a big thing on the screen before it begins where it will say ‘text in song recommendations,’” Sheeran explained, teasing that “There’s five slots in the gig where I’ll play any song that you guys decide.”

“So whatever song you wanna hear at the gig, go look at the screen, text it, and it’ll basically tally up the songs, and I will play those songs, whatever the song is.

“I will learn it before the show,” he said, “So, surprise me and see you tomorrow.”

Sheeran will perform at Go Media Stadium for two nights. Following his Auckland shows, he’ll perform in Wellington and Christchurch (two shows) before making his way to Australia.

His Australian tour begins at Perth’s Optus Stadium (31 January and 1 February). It continues at Sydney’s Accor Stadium (13 February, 14 February, 15 February), Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium (20 February, 21 February, 22 February), Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium (26 February, 27 February, 28 February), and concludes at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, 5 March.

Sheeran is touring in support of his latest album, the technicolour dream Play, which features the hit singles Azizam, Sapphire, and Old Phone.

For his Loop Tour, Sheeran is joined by special guests Vance Joy and Mia Wray (all shows), BIIRD (New Zealand and Perth), and Aaron Rowe (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide). Tickets are available now via the Frontier Touring website.
