Ecca Vandal continues her impressive upward trajectory internationally, having been announced as one of the performers at Deftones’ annual Dia De Los Deftones festival.
Taking place on Saturday, 1 November, at Petco Park in San Diego, the South African-born, Melbourne-raised artist joins a line-up starring the titular alt-metal group, the recently returned hip-hop duo Clipse, American black metal/shoegaze outfit Deafheaven, and singer and rapper 2hollis. Additional acts appearing on the bill include Rico Nasty, Régulo Caro, Glare, and University.
Pre-sale tickets will be available via Live Nation on Thursday, 24 July, at 10 am PT (with the code LIGHTS) ahead of the general sale, starting on Friday, 25 July, at 10 am PT via Ticketmaster.
The festival was announced just two weeks after Deftones announced that their forthcoming album, private music, will be released on Friday, 22 August. The tenth album by the band comes five years after their previous effort, Ohms, and sees them reunited with producer Nick Raskulinecz, who worked on the band’s albums Diamond Eyes (2010) and Koi No Yokan (2012).
Commenting on her featuring on the Dia De Los Deftones line-up, Vandal wrote on social media, “this band has soundtracked so many beautiful, messy years of my life.
“a few years back, i rerouted an international flight just to catch their brisbane show — and it was magic. grew up screaming their music in my room, now i’m screaming on a stage AT THEIR FESTIVAL. life is truely wild and i’m not okay (in the best way possible) 😵💫 thank you for letting me be part of something so special @deftones ❤︎ ⋆˙𝜗ৎ”.

In late June, Vandal reminisced on an impressive five-month period that saw her open for Limp Bizkit’s recent European tour, hang out with Garbage’s Shirley Manson, Amyl And The Sniffers’ Amy Taylor, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, blink-182’s Travis Barker, and Tony Hawk. This year has also seen Vandal in the studio working on the follow-up to a string of breakthrough singles.
In February, Ecca Vandal dropped the ripping single CRUISING TO SELF SOOTHE. Her first piece of new music this year, the track arrived fresh from a local support slot for the globetrotting IDLES. Before its release, Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst described the track as “legendary.”
Last year, Ecca Vandal returned with her first new music in four years, releasing the tracks BLEED BUT NEVER DIE and THEN THERE’S ONE. The songs arrived after Vandal took a “breather for my heart, health and art.”
She’s also recently hinted at new music coming soon. With how her career is going (and how great the songs are), it’s safe to say that we are all in.
