Crazy Town lead vocalist Seth Binzer (better known by his stage name, Shifty Shellshock) passed away on Monday (25 June), and at the time his death was reported, no cause of death was known.
However, Howie Hubberman, a representative for Binzer, believes that he died from an accidental overdose.
Hubberman told Rolling Stone: “Seth has been struggling with substance abuse problems for quite some time. Seth was not happy with the daily struggle that’s called life. Some people cope in many different ways.
“It’s unfortunate we lose so many people to addiction and accessibility to harmful drugs. Shifty was a real-life tragedy. Too fast, too hard, too soon.”
Binzer’s experience with addiction was documented in the VH1 series Celebrity Rehab, as well as appearances in two seasons of Sober House in 2008 and 2009.
Binzer discussed his experiences with addiction again in 2012. A source close to him said at the time, “Seth has completely changed his life around and has checked into a highly regarded drug and alcohol treatment center [sic] where he will be working with them to restructure his life over the next 2 years.”

Last year, Binzer and Crazy Town co-vocalist Bobby Reeves made headlines after they engaged in a brutal brawl while on tour with Hed PE.
Crazy Town were then kicked off the tour. Hed PE’s Jared Gomes shared the news in an Instagram statement, where he said: “Hed PE had to kick Crazy Town off the tour. We’re not saints by any means, and Hed PE has done some crazy shit, and I’m not passing judgment on Crazy Town, or Seth or anything like that.
“He needs to get off the road and deal with that shit. If it was just a fistfight between band members, maybe I could be the first one to kinda mediate or some shit like that… But this is a lot deeper than that.”
Crazy Town are best known for the 2000 hit Butterfly. The single got to #4 in Australia and #3 in the UK and was a US #1 smash hit.
Binzer formed Crazy Town with bandmate Bret “Epic” Mazur in 1995 (then known as The Brimstone Sluggers) before changing the band name to Crazy Town in the late 1990s.
Mazur has since made a statement about his bandmate’s passing. You can read it below.
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we have learned the passing of our dear friend and brother, Seth...
