AusMusic Month has kicked off in earnest on triple j, with each Like A Version in November featuring an Australian artist covering another Australian artist.

The first Like A Version of the month was performed by the one and only Christine Anu, who lent her effortless groove and smooth vocals to Lil’ Obsession, originally recorded by rising R&B star BOY SODA.

With an incredible crew of musicians and backing vocalists behind her, Anu delivered the song with ease, with the arrangement pulling equally from soul, R&B, and reggae.

Throughout the song, she showcases stunning harmonies, falsetto, and commanding vocals, straight from her chest. The R&B runs are simply stunning; an expertly delivered performance.

In an interview with triple j, Anu explained that she’s always been obsessed with R&B, hip-hop, and soul music, and when it comes to BOY SODA, Lil’ Obsession is a “really great launch” for who he is as an artist.

“I just got the feels about it and thought, that’s my Like A Version song,” Anu said, adding that she’s always wanted to perform the iconic triple j segment. She also shared that she connects with BOY SODA’s musicality, and with the addition of reggae, she brought her Torres Strait Islander upbringing to the cover.

While in the triple j studio, Anu also performed the song Party, the third single from her 1995 debut studio album, Stylin’ Up. She hit the stage with Jamaica Moana and truly brought the party vibes to the room.

This week, it was announced that My Island Home, originally written and recorded by the Warumpi Band in 1987 and later brought back into the spotlight by Christine Anu, is one of ten songs being inducted into The National Songbook.

Kick-started by APRA AMCOS and the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, The National Songbook also includes classic tunes by Midnight Oil, The Presets, Helen Reddy, Yothu Yindi, and more.
