If there’s one thing that Australian music fans can rely on, it’s quality music arriving from Naarm/Melbourne artist Chitra.
Having made her presence felt in the world of music back in 2018, a self-titled EP from Chitra followed around the start of COVID, before listeners have since been treated to a string of singles. Alongside instant classics such as In My Opinion and Go Easy, fans last received new material from the Bellarine Peninsula-raised artist back in November with Motormouth.
Now, Chitra is back with her first track of the new year, unveiling the stunning Close Proximity, an introspective piece of work which sees her ruminating on the bittersweet nature of nostalgia.
Harnessing her introspective approach to songwriting, and paired with John Castle’s smooth production work, the track features Chitra looking at past relationships and noting how the passage of time is able to both soften and sharpen the memories we associate with them.
With a sound reminiscent of names like Mitski and Lucy Dacus, Close Proximity is a resonant piece of work rooted in atmospheric sonics that effortlessly accompany Chitra’s own journey to a sense of emotional clarity.
"This song emerged from reflecting on an all-encompassing love that completely consumed my ability to see things clearly,” Chitra says of the track. “It's about that dangerous tendency to romanticize the past and how that can keep you trapped in patterns that don't serve you anymore.

“The moment you realize your perception of someone has been warped by your own mind – and the freedom that comes with finally seeing through that illusion – it's both devastating and liberating."
Already Close Proximity is set to become a vital piece of Chitra’s stellar live show, which has already been seen supporting the likes of Phantastic Ferniture, Vacations and Lisa Mitchell. With news of a debut album set to arrive in the near future, it’s clear that 2025 is looking to soon become the year of Chitra.
