Camp Cope bassist, Artist & Community Liaison at Bad Apples Music, and Western Sydney coordinator at MusicNSW, Kelly Hellmrich, is set to release her debut book.
As revealed by the Melbourne-based literary agency, Sarah McKenzie Literary Management, on Instagram today (27 June), Hellmrich has sold the global rights to her forthcoming debut book to Penguin Random House after receiving interest from multiple publishers.
Per the synopsis, Hellmrich’s book will blend “cultural commentary, personal reflection and interviews” and feature inspirational female and gender-diverse musicians in Australia’s extraordinary music scene.
The book will cover a range of topics, such as “creative processes and starting out, sexual harassment and gender inequality, and motherhood, body image and representation” in music. It’s a book dedicated to and about artists who have built communities for others and opened doors for the next generation, all to create something better than what existed before.

In her Instagram Stories, Hellmrich said she had the “best team” behind her for the book's release, tagging Sarah McKenzie Literary Management, Penguin Books Australia, and Alison Urquhart, publisher at Penguin Random House. Of course, she also tagged her Camp Cope bandmates Georgia Maq and Sarah “Thomo” Thompson.
Last January, Camp Cope released their final-ever show—filmed at the Sydney Opera House in October 2023—as a full-length concert film.
Thomo said of the surprise release, “Camp Cope fans have always been the reason we have loved playing live, and this night was no different. You made it a show (and career) we will never forget. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support over the past eight years, none of this could’ve happened without you.”
In 2023, Camp Cope were nominated for the Australian Music Prize for their third and final album, Running With The Hurricane, released in 2022—King Stingray won the award.
Upon reviewing Running With The Hurricane, AMP judge Britt Aylen said: “Running With the Hurricane is Camp Cope's most complex and accomplished record yet. It's somehow both raw and polished, with layered vocals and a fuller sound than their previous offerings. Lyrically, still as powerful as ever.”
