Britney Spears' petition to end her 14-year conservatorship has been successful with a judge terminating the arrangement today in Los Angeles.
With the #freebritney movement gaining momentum over the past few years, Spears is now a free agent, ending the controversial conservatorship which has seen guardians including her father overseeing her life, affairs and finances.
"The conservatorship of the person and of the estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated," said the Brenda Penny, the Los Angeles Judge hearing the case.
Spears spoke about being forced to take medications, perform against her will and have her reproductive rights repressed throughout the alarming case which had widespread media scrutiny. Fans organising the #FreeBritney movement shut down the street outside the courthouse on Friday with "freedom parties" happening across the evening.
Spears' conservatorship began in 2008 as the pop star underwent a series of apparent mental health struggles including run-ins with paparazzi, with courts ruling she did not have the capacity to advocate for herself and instead providing a court-appointed lawyer and the controvertial conservatorship arrangement with her father Jamie Spears was put in place.

In July this year, the court allowed Spears to hire her own lawyer to advocate for an end to the conservatorship, ending in today's ruling. The case has opened up many questions about the way pop stars are treated by both the music industry and society, with the expectations on public figures under the microscope. The #FreeBritney movement has shon a light not just on conservatorships, but on societal expectations of celebrities and the rights of those in the public eye to have a private life and free agency.
