“I can be a bit of a cheeky bastard. It's about refusing to be bogged down in negativity.”

Aussie songwriting royalty Ben Lee has just dropped a brand new tune and vid - teasing fans for his upcoming album set for release next year.

The news come with the announcement of Lee inking a new deal with Warner Music - signing his full back catalogue as well as the 2022 release, I'm Fun! - the 20th studio release from Lee overall.

“It feels right," he explained of the new deal. "From day one, the Warner team have just been like 'What do you want to do? How can we help?' which are the dream words every artist wants to hear.

"They know that with an artist like me, you don’t try and fit a square peg in a round hole, you let me do my thing without interference, as strange as some of my choice might be, and that’s how you get the best results. I’m really grateful for this opportunity.”

The Catch My Disease singer shared his new track Born For This Bullshit this morning, complete with a cosmically silly video capturing the irreverent nature of the tune. Check it out here:

“Like all the best songs I’ve written, I had no idea how relevant it would be when I first wrote it," he said of the track. "We’re All in this Together was the same way. I wrote Born for this Bullshit in 2019 but I finally understand it in 2021. It's about positivity, swagger, keeping your chin up, even though we’re in total global chaos, true crisis, but still kinda choosing to enjoy the ride.”

Lee continues, “I can be a bit of a cheeky bastard. It's about refusing to be bogged down in negativity.”

The track was produced by US indie artist Sad13 (aka Speedy Ortiz singer Sadie Dupuis), who also features as a backing vocalist and guitarist for the tune. She'll appear on the upcoming album alongside Megan WashingtonGeorgia Maq, Zooey Deschanel and stacks more.

Lee is experiencing somewhat of a resurgence in Australia thanks to his quick stint on the cryptic TV guessing game The Masked Singer. The musician caught up with The Music earlier this week to tell us all about the experience:

"I mean, I really did it because it was bizarre, and especially after 30 years essentially in the music business," he explained, "I’m always looking to put myself in uncomfortable positions and I texted my friend Margaret Cho, the comic, when I got offered this and I just said ‘should I do this?’ Because she did it on the first season in the US and she said it’s like a ‘zen meditation practice for letting go of identity and control’ and I was like, awesome, let’s do it. And it is like that, it’s just totally bananas."

I'm Fun! is due out for release 17 June, 2022.
