Celebrating the importance and power of protest songs

Nominations for the 2016 National Indigenous Music Awards are now open, with this year's theme celebrating the importance and power of protest songs.

The theme is more than fitting for 2016, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wave Hill walk-off, the 40th anniversary of the Land Rights Act and the 30th anniversary of Yothu Yindi's Double Platinum release Tribal Voice.

This year's line-up is yet to be announced, but if previous years are any indication, a roster of powerful musical acts will surely make their mark on Australia's Indigenous political landscape.

Award categories include Artist, Album, Song, New Talent, Film Clip and Cover Art of the Year. There is also a Community Music Project Award and a NT category for Traditional Music.
