19-year-old Muso Sydnee Carter Wins Grand Prize At WAM Song Of The Year Awards

The young singer-songwriter was one of 17 winners at last night’s event in Fremantle.

Prodigious singer-songwriter Sydnee Carter has won the Grand Prize at the 2016-17 WAM Song Of The Year Awards, the 19-year-old also picking up the gong for the Pop category for her tune When We Were Young.

A previous SOTY nominee (and one-time X Factor contestant, among other achievements), Carter has been making waves not just in her home turf but abroad, having also showcased at Music Matters Live in Singapore.

She recently collaborated with Perth favourites Slumberjack on new tune Afraid, Unafraid, and fended off competition from fellow acclaimed musos Lucy Peach, Morgan Bain, Folk winner Riley Pearce (Seasick) and The Brow to claim her Pop prize.

More than 15 acts were honoured at last night's ceremony at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle, with more than $40,000 in prizes being given out. Other winners included the likes of Dan Howls, Tobacco Rat, Codee-Lee, Rag N' Bone, The Brownley Gospel Singers, Macshane, Jere Sosa and more.

Howls, who won the Blues/Roots prize for his song The Prince, also performed at the event, along with DJ Charlie Bucket, The Money war, and Ben Matthews.

The WAM Song Of The Year Awards were judged by a range of identities from the local music industry, including personnel from The Music, triple j, X-Press magazine, RTRFM, Mix 94.5, Perfect Pitch Publishing, Nannup Music Festival, Pilerats, Spotify, Radio Birdman, The Drones and Pendulum.
