More The Music More The Music

The Music is today announcing the launch of The Music Power Pick, a weekly feature shining a light on one song every week with the potential to become big Australian hit.

With a panel of respected content curators, the initiative responds to 2025 being the worst year in ARIA Chart history for Australian singles and aims to provide leadership for Australian media, DSPs and music lovers looking to support a song to give it the power of scale.

In the same month that the industry is asking punters to ‘Ausify their Algo’, the Power Pick is about cutting through the huge amount of great tracks released each week and unashamedly picking commercial winners to drive cross-industry support. The Power Pick aims to help bring the industry together to focus attention and resources to say no to the disappearance of Australian music from everyday mainstream cultural life.

The Power Pick isn’t about telling programmers what to do. It’s about giving them one song to be in their consideration pile, knowing it’s in everyone else’s too, and legitimising the art of 'gut feel' so that undeniable hits can surface quicker. It’s not telling people to do more because they should, its helping them to do more because they want to.

Or maybe you’re simply looking for a short-cut to ‘Ausify’ your own personal playlist, but are a little busy to go trawling through the new releases this week… we hear you. And we won’t tell.

The Power Pick panel is an enviable set of ears with respect across the radio, content and music industries. Our panel includes:

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Ash McGregor - Host of podcast Listen Up with Ash McGregor, ex-triple j Home & Hosed host

Irene Hulme - Content & Music Strategist, co-host of podcast Game Changers Radio, ex- programmer for Nova, Hit & ARN and creator of R&B Fridays

Maddy Rowe - Host of The Maddy Rowe Show on the Nova Network

The inaugural Power Pick is Tame Impala’s Dracula, a song that is already picking up steam in mainstream media and the panel thinks the time is right for commercial media to get on board. It’s currently #37 on the Spotify daily Top 50 (Australia), #18 on Shazam, #50 on the ARIA Singles Chart and has had an incredible 65 million global streams in just a few weeks.

It debuted at #48 this week on The Music Hot 100 radio chart based on triple j, TikTok Trending and Hit nights support and was added this week ATB to 2Day FM.

Power Pick panelist Ash McGregor said: “Dracula is already resonating globally, proving once again that Tame Impala operates on a level few can touch. It’s a world-class release - cinematic, hypnotic, and impossible to ignore; an undeniable reminder that Australian music continues to shape the world stage, and we should be amplifying that momentum locally.”

The panel will also include input from across media and DSPs, giving a well-rounded view, but a singular focus on finding commercial hits. The Music also has a weekly playlist where you can delve deeper to discover great new songs, while the Power Pick is be the easy way for busy programmers to make sure that they can ‘Ausify’ their music meetings EVERY week.

The Music publisher Stephen Green said: “The Power Pick isn’t about changing the world overnight, but it is about creating an environment where regular commercial Australian music success is expected, not surprising.

“I am humbled by the calibre of the panel that have agreed to come together to make a difference to the visibility of Australian hits in our local culture. The Music is proud of our mission to platform initiatives that drive our local industry forward and get our artists heard.”
