Spotify has upgraded its experience for free-tier, ad-supported users, officially enabling a “Pick and Play Any Song” function rather than non-stop shuffle.

The unexpected change marks a major overhaul of the app’s functionality that’s been in the making for four years. Now, Australian users will have more control over what they play.

Previously, free users were limited to shuffle mode when listening on mobile. The update has already been rolled out, so ad-supported users can choose exactly what songs they want to blast.

In addition to making music discovery and overall listening smoother, Spotify has enabled a new community function on the free tier, allowing all users to share music and song lyrics with their friends. The new categories are as follows:

  • Pick & Play: Got a nagging earworm? Hit play in the Spotify app, and you can pick and play any song you want.

  • Search & Play: Type in your favourite track and start listening instantly.

  • Share & Play: Love sharing your favourite tracks with friends? Has an artist shared a new track on social that you want to hear? Tap to listen right away.

While all Spotify users are officially on the level playing field of being able to enjoy any songs they want, any time they want, Spotify Premium customers also have access to the ability to download music from their library, better audio quality than the ad-supported tier, offline listening, no ads, the newly announced lossless audio and AI playlists.

It is part of our platform-wide commitment to Australian music, with investment across playlists, marketing, and these unique fan events.

“From Spacey Jane's intimate in-the-round performance, to ONEFOUR’s exclusive album launch event in Western Sydney, through to Alison Wonderland’s immersive GHOST WORLD underground rave, these events highlight how Spotify is supporting local artists both on and off platform.”
