Just six months after announcing his retirement as Music Programmer for Groovin’ The Moo festival, Rich Moffat has returned to the music industry, but to a venue rather than a festival.

Rich Moffat is the new Music Programmer for the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine, Victoria (about 140 kilometres northwest of Melbourne). Moffat will bring decades of experience within the live music industry to his new role.

Moffat moved to Castlemaine in 2022, but before then, he worked in countless legendary Melbourne live music venues, such as the Corner Hotel, Northcote Social Club, The Public Bar, and many more. In addition to being a Music Programmer for Groovin’ The Moo, Moffat also held that position with other Australian music festivals, including Falls, Splendour In The Grass, and Queenscliff Music Festival.

Theatre Royal owners Tim Heath and Felicity Cripps have been in charge of the 500-capacity venue, cinema and restaurant since late 2016 and are thrilled to welcome Moffat to the team.

The Theatre Royal is known for hosting live music, comedy shows, and festivals, providing the beating heart to Castlemaine’s entertainment scene. In the coming months, the venue will host sold-out shows by Kate Miller-Heidke and The Saints, as well as gigs from the Buzzcocks and Grace Cummings. Check out more of the venue’s upcoming events here.

Heath and Cripps welcomed Moffat by stating: “We are delighted to welcome Rich Moffat to our team at Theatre Royal Castlemaine. We admire Rich as a person and his history as a programmer and look forward to him bringing an even more diverse range of talent to our beautiful historical venue.”

Moffat said of his new role, “I truly didn’t expect to get back into the venue booking game, but the opportunity to share my experience within my local community is too good to pass up. I have seen so many amazing shows (and movies!) there over the last few years - Cate Le Bon, Amyl And The Sniffers, Arj Barker, The Necks.... The staff are friendly, the pizza is divine, the audience is diverse and hungry to support and discover something new and interesting. Come visit us soon!”

Upon announcing his retirement from the music industry earlier this year, Moffat said it felt like time to “make some space for others to take charge as curators of future events.” Moffat started working on Groovin The Moo in 2009, four years after its initial launch in 2005.
