Daniel Johns is the first artist to receive silver accreditation in Australia, with ARIA officially unveiling the new classification over the weekend.

ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd presented the first silver accreditation to Johns on Saturday (1 November), during the world-first screening of Daniel Johns: What If The Future Never Happened?, at Sydney’s State Theatre.

Johns was awarded the silver classification for his 2022 album, FutureNever, and continues his streak as the most-awarded artist in ARIA history.

According to a press release, silver accreditation is available for albums by Australian artists who have moved 20,000 units within three years of the record’s release date. The certification is only applicable to albums released on or after 1 January 2021.

“The pursuit of writing a great album has always been my biggest inspiration. A collection of songs that is greater than the sum of its parts,” Johns began.

He continued, “To have my second solo album FutureNever become the first ARIA-accredited silver album is such an honour, and I hope this new accreditation encourages Australian artists of all genres to stay committed to their album releases.

“Music is not a collection of social-ready sound bites, heart and soul cannot be generated by machine learning, real emotion beats artificial intelligence every day of the week. Long live the Australian album because without it there’s no music, only noise.”

Annabelle Herd added that the launch of silver accreditation is about celebrating the “strength and scale” of Australian music, calling Johns the “perfect” artist to receive the first one.

“Introducing silver accreditation is about recognising the strength and scale of local music in 2025, and Daniel Johns is the perfect artist to receive the first one,” Herd remarked. “His career is proof of what happens when creativity, ambition and risk-taking meet the kind of connection that defines Australian music at its best.”

Before his silver accreditation, Johns had already won 21 ARIA Awards. In addition to his solo work and albums with Silverchair, he enjoys an artistic career that spans music and film.

What If The Future Never Happened? was directed by James Medlam and is described as a “genre-bending, semi-autobiographical featurette that puts reality and fantasy in a hyper-speed spin cycle.” Filmed in 2022, Johns made the call to hold it back while completing the project and celebrated the 30th anniversary of Silverchair’s acclaimed debut, Frogstomp.

“After some time away from the spotlight, I’m nervous and excited about premiering the Featurette in some of Australia’s most iconic theatres,” he wrote on social media.

“I’ll also join you in person to talk music and open up my demo vault to play music I’ve written over the last 3 decades. It will be chaotic, spontaneous and hopefully fun.”
