Totally Unicorn return with Hard Feelings, the latest in a series of singles written and recorded over the past few years — one at a time, across different cities, studios, and states of mind.
Rather than chase cycles or trends, the band’s focus in recent years has been simple: write songs, and get better at writing songs. In that time, they’ve treated Totally Unicorn like a kind of musical lab — a place to experiment, bend genres, and twist pop culture tropes until they come out looking like some evil twin of their former self.
Most of what’s written never leaves the room. But every now and then, a couple of tracks make it out alive. Hard Feelings is one of them.
The song was recorded in a weekend at Golden Retriever Studios in Marrickville with long-time collaborator Jonathan Boulet (Party Dozen, ARSE). The studio’s right across from the bowlo — an added bonus when you’re dealing with a track about anxiety and overthinking.
Frontman Drew Gardner calls it his “anthem for anxiety and sleepless nights” — for the moments when your brain refuses to switch off, replays old conversations on loop, and plots out disaster scenarios just for fun.
Touring Nationally in support of this, the show at the Tote will be a hell of a good time!
