VIDEO PREMIERE: Suburban Haze - Bare Teeth

Newcastle indie-rockers Suburban Haze are on the cusp of setting off on tour in support of imminent album Wilt and, before they hit the road, theMusic.com.au is stoked to bring you the first look at their film clip for their rockin', raw, heartfelt new single Bare Teeth.

Shot by David Fulham, the video channels Weezer's Say It Ain't So clip if it were directed by David Lynch — or that's what they say they were going for, at least, and if you ask us, they've pulled it off with considerable success.

The song's downcast themes are complemented nicely by vocalist Paul Pickles' raw, earnest evocations, treading ever so lightly into the kind of just-on-key but undeniably distinct territory occupied by Jamie Stewart (of Xiu Xiu).

Bare Teeth forms part of Wilt's larger narrative, which delves into pretty heavy themes of depression and existentialism as its protagonist contends with the weight of the world around them.

"The loss of a loved one has the protagonist feeling angry and hopeless," Pickles said of the set-up for the track. "Knowing they would do anything to see their loved one again but knowing that it could never happen."

Utilising some off-kilter techniques and ideas such as "using an old telephone as a microphone, singing backwards and then reversing it in post [and] using kids' musical toys in sections", Wilt is a typically atypical affair for Suburban Haze, though they've taken measures to make the wider package a little more accessible to the casual listener's ears.

"We’ve made the [album] songs a bit more standard structure-wise but crammed those structures with our weird tendencies," Pickles explained in a statement. "I hope the listener is able to enjoy the off-beat nature of what we are doing."

Wilt will be released next Friday, 11 August. The band will kick off their tour the night before in Newcastle (with Jen Buxton and Belle Badi), and go on to perform in Sydney (with Egoism and Ultracrush), Canberra (with Slagatha Christie, Rumblr and P.J Johnson), Wollongong (with Nothing Rhymes With David, Lost Coast and Soft Karate), Adelaide (with Hot Mess and Pinkish Blu) and Melbourne (with Turn South and Elevator Talk).

They'll be joined at all shows by Adelaide alt-country crew No Oaths.
