The 50 most influential people in the Australian music industry.
Tim Janes spent over a decade with Shock Records before leaving to start Cooperative Music Australia with Neil Robertson in 2011. Janes was then approached by Universal Music Australia’s George Ash to head up Caroline Label Services, which has since partnered with the likes of Spunk, Cooking Vinyl, Nuclear Blast and more.
Caroline’s international artists were among the most important of 2019. Dave’s Psychodrama scored itself both The Mercury Prize and Brit Awards’ Album of The Year. Denzel Curry broke in Australia and territories around the world off the back of his album ZUU and that triple j Like A Version performance. It’s worth noting too that Curry’s 2018 album Ta13oo came in at #27 on the ARIA Albums chart, while less than a year later ZUU debuted at #18.
Catfish & The Bottlemen’s The Balance landed at #9 on the Albums Chart on debut, while their track Cocoon went Gold. It proves again that Tim Janes and the Caroline Australia team are ahead of the curve when it comes to rising acts. Locally, there were releases from Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND, Alex Lahey (who also hit Gold status with her track Every Day’s The Weekend), Elizabeth and Clowns, who all delivered impressive streaming figures throughout the year.
"Lots of highlights, on the international front it's hard to top Dave’s Psychodrama, dropped in March, which has been such an important album winning both The Mercury and Brit Awards, Album of The Year. On the local front, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Alex Lahey, POND, Clowns and Elizabeth all released compelling albums."
