The Sum Of Us.
Sum 41 play the Loudmouth Stage at Livid at the RNA Showgrounds on Saturday.
“I used to like Space Invaders when I was a kid; I use to have friends that had them 'cause my parents wouldn't buy me video games. They didn't want me in the house. They always use to keep me outside all the time,” recounts Sum 41's drummer Steve when I ask him about the Space Invaders icons on their website (www.sum41.com). “Dave and Derek were really into it. I'm not really a video game kind of guy, it looks cool though. I like it in that way. Dave's a game geek he does it all the time, he's the game master.”
On the subject of video games, Sum 41 has a 3D game that you can play on their site.
''I've never actually played that. I see it all the time and it looks like that Dire Straits video Money For Nothing or whatever it's called. I don't really want to play it. I don't know anything about computers I just know how to check my e-mail and how to look up porn sites; I always waste too much money on membership. But I don't like the fake big tits, blonde things that's just really boring. Video games are too confusing.”
Sum 41 are currently working on a new DVD as a follow up to Introduction To Destruction.
“The new one has more road stuff; it's just us touring. We made a couple of little movies to put on it. We did a ‘pain for pleasure’ documentary where we pretend that we're a rock band. We pretend we're a heavy metal band and have fake accents and argue. Like Spinal Tap but just not as funny,” Steve laughs.
They've also completed work on a new album.
“It's getting mixed right now. It's been a year and two months since the last album. It'll be out in November. It's called 'Does this look infected?' On the album cover there's this gross picture of me all covered in blood. We had a crazy night on the town and I had too much to drink and I don't really remember what happened.”
This year Spin magazine voted them as one of the Top 40 bands that matter.
“I thought it was funny. I wonder how much it cost the record label?” Steve jokes. “Also in the UK magazine Kerrang we were nominated for best band in the world! I think people were booing though. I think Red Hot Chilli Peppers won.”
Sum 41 are one of the many diverse acts on this year's Livid bill.
“Sometimes we get placed on a bill with a whole bunch of bands that are different to us and we just have to try and do our best without getting a fucking shoe in the face. We played a show with Social Distortion once and it was the toughest fucking crowd we've ever had to play, they didn't beat us up though so I think we did pretty fucking good. It was so bad, I think that any Social Distortion fan there would of thought that any band no matter who they were that opened up would of sucked. They just want to see Mike, they're all there just to see Mike.”
