Melbourne-born Brissy journalist and author Andrew Stafford launched Queensland label Pig City in 2016 to cater for unheard, local gems. Some Jerks, fronted by ex-Aampirellas frontwoman Victoria Watson, were the first to be signed, having formed in 2010.
Stafford describes their sound as "Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra pashing in the surf". "We started out as a garage-surf band," begins drummer Simon Walker. "In time, more of our tastes have been included and if it works it works. '60s girl groups and garage influences have moved aside to accommodate the obvious Blondie, and less obvious Off! and psych influences," he elaborates. Their second album "Strange Ways [was] two years in the making in what was a difficult time for the band personally. It's an album we love, and we've had a lot of fun with it".
"Brisbane has many good young garage bands, and a great older rock'n'roll scene," he reflects. "Plenty of supportive punters who love their music and the camaraderie that comes with live music. Need more venues." They'll be "having a break in April/May to start recording the next album. It’ll be mostly recorded in our own studio. We have some of it written, and it's evolving into a heavier version of our garage/surf".
