What is the best thing about running a record store in 2025?
Being able to cater to people of all ages and tastes. Due to the surge of popularity in Vinyl over the past decade, so much more is pressed and is available to the public – anything from Bluey to Anthrax is on wax now. Vinyl attracts a diverse and friendly crowd and we are always discovering new artists just from conversations with our customers, which helps us to continue to learn and grow in our own space. Having been in the industry for 10 years now, its been great to watch records explode in popularity and see the next generation discovering vinyl for the first time.
What is the hardest thing about running a record store in 2025?
Unfortunately, being located in Australia does come with setbacks as far as availability and distribution goes. This is a particular headache from larger companies, in regards to freight and transport costs. Very few records are actually pressed within Australia, the majority of what you find on shelves are pressed in countries including France, Germany and USA. It sort of puts us on the other side of the world from where most of the action is. Further to this, having the popularity of vinyl picked up by big box stores like JB Hi-Fi increases competition, as they have more purchasing power and are able to sell at a thinner margin than independent record stores.
