The Sydney-based musician releases his debut EP at the end of next month, with tour dates through May/June..
If you're yet to be acquainted, Nathan Cavaleri is a Sydney-based musician adding a slick, modernised twist to a nostalgic blues-n-roots-inspired sound; mixing pop hooks and intricate songwriting with raw instrumentation and this soft, DIY-esque haze. It's a sound that's seen him travel incredibly far for an act with only a few major tracks under his belt, touring internationally and playing shows including Bluesfest as a teenager before insomnia and anxiety got the better of him, distracting Cavaleri from his craft for a period of around four years or so. The impact of these four years and his approach to music and songwriter afterwards is something that defines his debut EP Demons - a multi-track release out May 31st that on release, will showcase a side of the musician who dives deep into his influences in blues and its modernised adaptations. "This time around, I wanted to express more than blues would allow," he says in a quote. "Each track throughout the writing and production process conformed to no specific genre and called upon an array of my favourite artists., from J.J.Cale and B.B.King to Bowie, Lana Del Ray, and Mos Def."
Over the last twelve months or so, Cavaleri has been teasing the EP with a series of singles aimed to showcase some of the EP's many varied sounds, giving insight into a multi-faceted artist on the rise who may quickly become a breakout name in the blues/roots world, especially considering the grand, international success of Tash Sultana. 29 Gold Stars, the EP's latest tease, is an example of the more down-tempo side of Cavaleri's sound, with soft guitar backings meeting hazy vocals which today, are joined by one-shot visuals in its official video clip. It's an extension of his video for Guilty Pleasures, taking a classic, soapbox theme and presenting it in a new light; which we'll let director Armand de Saint-Salvy explain: "As the story happens over a number of weeks, we had to create the illusion of passing time by making changes to the set, our lighting and the character’s wardrobe while actually filming," he says. "This not only required a very complex choreography of our actors and the camera, but a number of crew that had to work around them. After more than ten hours of takes, we nailed it. The final cut was take 52 and captured after 2 AM."
It's a long, extensive process but one that appears well worth it, so dive into the clip below, and stay tuned for the full release of Demons on May 31st.
