Dancing to Technology

16 September 2014 | 2:22 pm | Taylor Yates

A show inspired by technology and presented in dance form

TwoPoint is a contemporary dance work set in a world of childhood games. The audience is invited to keep their phones on during the performance as the emotional and physical connections between objects and human beings are explored.

“Being in Gen Y, I am interested in the effects that modern technology and social media have on society. My personal experience and the inspiration for this work came from thinking about how as a child/teenager, I connected with people through having a physical conversation.

Nowadays, I don’t see people for years at a time, but [I] know exactly what has happened in their lives as their Facebook posts pop up on my newsfeed everyday. It made me reflect on the connections I have with people and things, and how these have shifted,” says the show’s creator, Ashlee Barton.

And the way we connect with people isn’t the only thing that has shifted; TwoPoint is Barton’s first time dancing within a work she choreographed. For Barton, this performance is a totally new and experimental experience. Choreographing and dancing in a show are two very different things – and it hasn’t been an easy ride: “This has probably been the most challenging thing I have had to do, as generally I can’t see what something looks like from the outside – only what it feels like from the inside.”
