Along with the release of What 2 Say, Donny Dee has also announced that his next track Patience will be dropping in August.
Collaborating with producer D-Mac for the forthcoming Patience, Donny Dee seamlessly integrated his heartfelt lyrics into the beat he discovered online, resulting in a powerful sonic experience.
While it originally began as a collaboration with Rory Fresco, after the demo sat untouched for 1.5 years, Donny Dee took charge and crafted the final version of the song himself.
Donny Dee’s story is one of passion ignited in his formative years, drawing inspiration from legendary artists like Eminem, 50 Cent, 2pac, and Biggie Smalls.
But it was more than just admiration; it was a family connection that further fueled his dedication. Raised by a hip-hop DJ father, who handed down a Death Row 2Pac album, Donny Dee found himself immersed in the culture from an early age, setting the stage for his own musical journey — and we can’t wait to hear more from him.
Following the release of What 2 Say and ahead of the release of his upcoming single Patience, we caught up with rising Sydney rapper Donny Dee to suss out everything you need to know.
Give us the story behind your name?
When I was younger (about 16) all my mates in lane cove started calling me Donny so the name has really been there a long time.
The “Dee” part comes from my last name Dulvey. There isn’t really much behind the name, it’s just me and has been for quite some time. I’m about to copyright my name officially as a brand and a business so it’s going to be my name permanently.
If your music was a flavour, what would it taste like?
I’d say it would have to be Spicy Siracha Sauce flavour because of the rawness behind the music itself and the way I present myself.
I’m not a boring person and I never have been. I’ve always cared a lot about my appearance and I have loved fashion since I found out about it.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they impacted your own sound and style?
I’d have to say Polo G, Calboy, Juiceworld, Tupac, Sleepy Hollow, Lil Tjay and Nba Youngboy.
What’s been the biggest moment in your career so far?
I’d have to say being uploaded to MTV Australia and New Zealand for not just one day, but a whole month.
I’d also say having a collab with Rocnation’s new artist Rjae which continues to kick goals internationally and in the USA rap game.
I might add I’m also very blessed to say that across two platforms, Youtube and Spotify I have attained about 500k streams in total.
What's the most unusual or unexpected source of inspiration you've drawn from when writing a song?
Im NGL, I used to watch Tory Lanez and Toosii record via Instagram live.
I was instantly inspired by their processes and decided to try it for myself. The freest type punch-in method really works for me now and I make songs really fast with less or little effort these days.
Can you share a hilarious or cringe-worthy moment from your early days as an artist?
I can’t really say I have a cringe-worthy moment because I have treated my music and my platform very seriously since the start.
Although I used to do some pretty cringe (in my opinion) raps on Instagram, in saying that, people really liked them. I have always been a creative so I understand the game and have treated it with the proper respect since day dot.
What are the top tracks or artists you’re vibing on rn?
Right now, I’m really vibing with Rjae, SoFaygo, King Von, Rory Fresco, Dblock Europe, and Sleepy Hollow.
What’s something that fans not might know about you?
I’m the only white kid on my Dad’s side of the family.
If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Lil Tjay True 2 Myelf, because the wordplay, songwriting, vibe and versatility are all there on this album in my eyes. It also went 3x Platinum so that kinda speaks for itself.
For an artist to have such a successful first album, I believe for someone so young he is great at what he does.
