Listen: Swim Good x Merival - Since you Asked (Star Slinger Edit)

Star Slinger’s got a habit of celebrating vocals in his originals and remixes. There aren’t many producers out there who focus so much on the melody of voices as much as instrumentation, but Star Slinger’s work regularly shines a spotlight on the voice in interesting ways. The first time this approach really stood out for me was on his complete re-interpretation of Gucci Mane’s G-Love (You Don’t Love Me) in Baby Mama. Letoya Luckett’s vocals became pitched and chopped against buoyant melodies until the tone of Star Slinger’s hypercolour cut was leagues apart from the original.

With Swim Good & Merival’s Since You Asked (a track we originally covered HERE), Star Slinger’s transformed the song into something far more upbeat and immediate. Merival’s vocals are still the star of the show, but previously minimal elements of the composition have been teased out and brought to the forefront. The beat’s more active and the previously subtle string section now decisively pulls the track along as the song takes on a more energetic persona.

Since You Asked remains a bittersweet exploration of heartbreak and regret, but in Star Slinger’s edit, at least we can now dance while we cry.
