What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.

Answered by: Alana Jagt

Give us a short description of your music: A mix of stormy alt-country and folk-rock noir. I always compare our sound to be a little bit like when Bob Dylan went electric, but with better singing.

Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? Black Rock Band, Ainsley Farrell, Mojo Juju, Gordon Koang, Nancie Schipper, Close Counters, Electric Fields (although being from SA I've seen them many times before), Stellie and PINCH POINTS.

Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? I have so much fun performing live, it's what I'm most experienced at and I'm lucky to have some amazing musicians in my band too. All of these things are reflected in the performance and make for a good time! I've had a special outfit made too, so there's that.

What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? Obviously streaming is already giant but it's definitely something that's still growing and still changing with time. With changes in technology I think artists will stay independent longer/keep more control of their careers, which in turn will shape how bigger labels/organisations operate. It's a good time to be an artist.

In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? National Abbe May tour support (2018). Supports; Kasey Chambers, Didirri, Archie Roach, Mick Thomas, (2018/19). Adelaide Guitar Festival (2018). Full band tour Melbourne/regional Victoria (2018/19). ABC Radio Melbourne live studio performance – The Friday Revue (2018). Adelaide City NYE show (20,000 people).

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? I'm not sure, I guess you don't know what you're going to learn until you learn it. I'd hope to come away with a better scope of what the music industry looks like at the moment and a clear picture of what direction I should be moving next.

What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? Probably what's happening in NSW with regard to lockout laws and legislation for festivals. It's really harmful for NSW but has knock-on effects for everyone else as well; it's limiting where artists can play and tour, and touring is so vital for Australian musicians. It's a music culture king hit.

What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? I've had advice from all over the place and I guess the main advice I've taken away from it is to make sure you make the most with meeting people, take it easy, know your limits and stay hydrated. It's all common sense stuff but it's all worth being said!

When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 4 Sep, Black Bear Lodge, 11.40pm; 5 Sep, The Brightside, 8.10pm.
