"I feel we’ve found our feet with this album."
Key Out are back with their second album, premiering today with The Music.
Dubbed Anthropomorphia, the album saw the Sydney trio work with Wayne Connolly (Amy Shark, Matt Corby) on mixing and mastering after recording it themselves.
"I feel we’ve found our feet with this album. It’s the first time we’ve recorded something entirely ourselves, and moved beyond some of the constraints of previous attempts," band member Paddy Haid told The Music.
"Doing our previous record with Greg Walker was eye opening. Seeing his creative approach to catching interesting moments and sounds gave us the confidence to try to do this one ourselves.
"We weren’t racing the clock in the studio, or using the same few instruments and sounds as the spine of songs. The arrangements evolved as we did bits and pieces at home over summer. If something sounded better, we kept it. So there are songs we began demoing with big drums and angular guitars that ended up as acoustic whispers, and sequencers and bits of technology we hadn’t used before.
"After we finished tracking we asked Wayne Connolly to mix it. Like the rest of the process, this wasn’t part of the original plan, but we’re really glad it’s worked out that way. He organised our mess of sounds and gave everything a bit more space and sparkle."
