Triple J Gain In Final Radio Ratings Of 2014

Eighth rating period released

Tastemaking radio station triple j have enjoyed gains in three of the five metro markets in the eighth, and final, radio ratings period of the year.

It has been an intriguing year of the ratings, with new provider GfK taking over from Neilsen. The biggest story of the year was in Sydney, where Kylie & Jackie-O’s defection from 2Day FM to KIIS proved to have an immediate effect. By March even triple j was attracting more listeners than the once-powerhouse 2Day FM, who went on to hit new lows in November.

Sydney

There is very little light at the end of the tunnel for 2Day FM, who must be wanting this year to end as soon as possible. Their breakfast share improved 0.1 percentage points to a 3 percent weekday share, ahead of only 2RN and ABC News Radio (both 2.8 percent) in that slot.

2GB remain the dominant force with a 13.2 percent weekday share (down 0.3 percentage points). Triple j's weekday gain of 0.7 points to 6.9 percent sees them jump Triple M, who are down 0.8 to 5.7 percent.

Some of triple j's gain came in the 25-39 demographic, where a 1.5 point jump gives them a market-leading 14.5 percent share. Again, that came partly at the expense of Triple M, who lost 2.4 points to sit at 12.6 percent.

Melbourne

3AW confirm their lead in the Melbourne market by pulling away from closest challenger ABC 774. The public broadcaster had got withing 0.3 percentage points last period, but a 0.6 weekday jump for 3AW and a 1.8 point fall for ABC has split them again.

As with many market leaders, 3AW's strength comes from the breakfast slot, where they hold a commanding 18.5 percent share. The only other frequency in double figures is ABC with 13.7 percent.

Triple j remained steady with a 5.4 percent weekday share, down 0.1 points.

Brisbane

Triple j are — by some margin — the biggest weekday gainers in Brisbane, jumping 1.2 percentage points to 9.3 percent. The gains came solidly across demographics and timeslots.

Nova 106.9 extend their weekday lead with a 0.6 point jump to 14 percent. 97.3FM are second for the second ratings period in a row with a 1 percentage point fall to a 12.2 percent share.

Perth

MIX 94.5 retain their weekday lead despite a 0.7 percentage point fall (now 14.2 percent share), with 96FM second with 10.6 percent (up 0.8) and triple j third with 11.3 percent (up 0.7). It's consistently triple j's strongest market and they dominate the 18-24 demographic with a massive 33 percent share (up 6.5 percentage points).

Biggest weekday loss was posted by 6PR, down 1.3 percentage points to 7.5 percent.

Adelaide

MIX 102.3 extend their lead with a 0.8 point jump to a 15.7 percent share. The strongest gain in the market was for 1.8 point jump to a 11.1 percent share, equal third.

It was a bit tougher form triple j, for whom Adelaide was the toughest market this period, with a 0.8 point drop to 6.7 percent.
