Seventh radio ratings period

Triple j’s ratings are bouncing back around the country while 2DayFM’s woes in Sydney continue in the latest radio ratings survey.

The seventh survey of 2014 sees the publicly-funded youth broadcaster post weekday gains in all but one of the metro markets, building momentum towards the end of the year. It’s less positive reading for 2DayFM’s breakfast slot – once the envy of Sydney radio – as they slide to a worryingly low 2.9 percent of the marked share, the lowest in the sector.

Sydney

It’s another chapter in a horror year for Southern Cross Austereo’s 2DayFM as their breakfast ratings plummet to 2.9 percent of the market, losing another 0.4 percentage points. It means that stations like NEWST (3.1 percent), 2CH (3.5 percent), 2RN (3.1 percent) and ABCFM (3.2 percent) are all attracting more listeners in the key 5.30am-9am slot.

Recovering after the departure of golden couple Kyle & Jackie-O to KIIS 106.5 this year (a 10.5 percent breakfast share this period), the team of Mel B, Sohpie Monk, Jules Lund and Merrick Watts has failed to fire. Mel B has already quit while Monk will leave after the end of her one-year contract. Lund and Watts will also be dumped from the slot in 2015.

The only silver lining for 2Day FM is a 0.1 percentage point jump overall, which pulls them up to a 3.7 percent weekday share.

2GB remain the dominant frequency with a 13.5 percent weekday share, owning breakfast with a 14.1 percent share – down 1.9 percentage points.

A good period for triple j saw them build to a 6.2 percent weekday share with gains in the 25-39 and 40-54 demographics.

Melbourne

ABC774 close the gap on 3AW, with the public broadcaster gaining 0.7 percentage points to hold a 12.1 percent weekday share while 3AW lost 1.4 points to hold 12.4 percent. A lot of 774’s gains came in the breakfast slot, where a 2 point gain puts them at 15.4 percent.

Elsewhere the strongest weekday gain came for triple j, who jumped 0.8 points to 5.5 percent. In the 25-39 demographic Nova 100 have caught up with triple j and they’re tied leaders with a 13.7 percent share each. FOXFM lead the 18-24 age group with a 21.1 percent share.

Brisbane

NOVA 106.9 have taken the weekday lead with a 1.7 point jump to a 13.4 percent share, edging ahead of 97.3FM’s 132 percent (up 0.1).

The typically tight market has splintered somewhat in this seventh period, with heavily breakfast losses (2.9 points to 12.2 percent) for ABC612 taking them down to a 9.7 percent weekday share. They also had losses across the other timeslots and the weekend.

Triple j sustained their only losses this period in the Brisbane market, losing 0.4 points to an 8.1 percent weekday share.

Perth

Triple j post a gain in their strongest market after enduring a small slide last period – they now have a 10.6 percent weekday share (up 0.6). The market leaders are still MIX 94.5 with 14.9 percent (up 1) with NOVA 93.7 holding 13.6 percent (down 0.1).

Despite taking a 2.8 percentage point hit triple j still lead the 18-24 demographic with a 26.5 percent share, ahead of NOVA’s 25 percent (down 1.3).

Adelaide

The market’s biggest gains came from triple j, who gained 1.1 percent points to hold a 7.5 percent weekday share. That’s a gain of exactly what they lost in the sixth survey results. MIX 102.3 continue to control the weekday lead with a 14.9 percent share (down 0.4) ahead of NOVA91.9’s 12 percent (up 0.1).
