"The album has come out joyful and sad and upbeat and chill and I hope when people close their eyes and listen they see their dream crush coming toward them from a crowded room in slow-motion..."
Aussie songwriter Kids At Midnight - aka Jane Elizabeth Hanley - is releasing her long-awaited debut album All I Ever Wanted Was Your Love tomorrow, but you can listen to it right now with its premiere on theMusic.com.au!
The Melbourne indie pop artist garnered worldwide attention earlier this year when her track Boys Like You featured on Mindy Kaling's Never Have I Ever Netflix series.
"It feels like it took such a long time to make these songs sounds like what I’d imagined they would in my head when I dreamed them up," Hanley told The Music.
"It’s been an intense journey writing and singing about your life as it happens and then putting the producer hat on and objectively picking the good and bad bits out... it can send you a bit sideways!
"You write the song, sing it, play it, record it, produce it... It doesn’t make for a calm sane experience. Especially if you’re going through a breakup, then singing about it, then producing yourself. Like, ‘I know you’ve lost your entire world Jane and you want to have a good cry but see how you sang that word weird? Yeah I don’t like that, sing it again...’
"But the album has come out joyful and sad and upbeat and chill and I hope when people close their eyes and listen they see their dream crush coming toward them from a crowded room in slow-motion... I wanted that edge of your breath, heart racing feeling in some songs, and then a real cinematic tragic longing in others. It’s a dramatic album, a bit nerdy in parts, but always dreaming. So it’s me in a nutshell! I kind of can’t believe I’ve finished it."
