Album Review: Pigeon - Fortunes

Though largely uninventive, this release delivers exactly what it sets out to in a frank, accessible manner.

A lack of hooks and a heavy reliance on dynamics relegates Fortunes to that brand of highly produced, ubiquitous electro-pop that dominates the current indie scene. However it offers glimpses of something more interesting in Animals' sparkling synth crescendo and in the wormy, rhythmic dance-pop of Encounters. The EP draws on a worn-out '80s revival sound with its use of forceful drum patterns and saxophone in the same vein as M83's Midnight City, notably in driving, thumpy opener, All That Bad. Though largely uninventive, this release delivers exactly what it sets out to in a frank, accessible manner.
