Fringe: Motherfucker

19 September 2014 | 2:27 pm | Stephanie Liew

The story of Oedipus has been retold and adapted so often it’s a risk to even attempt it nowadays. Unless you’re going to do something wildly different, it’s difficult to impress.

This is Motherfucker’s downfall; although it focuses on Jocasta’s narrative, merely giving her more agency does not enlighten. Cheeky sphinxes, dance breaks and barely there camp factor provide only cheap laughs – if that. Certain stylistic choices (lighting, scene changes and use of stage) delight, while others baffle (sound design drowning out lines).

Moments of visceral violence, tragedy and lust are present, but soon enough feel just as tired and forced as the rehashed script.
